Yes indeed.
The oringinal fort built in 1839 in response to an anticipated border dispute is alive and well and located in downtown Fort Kent. During the summer months, the fort or blockhouse as it is known locally is manned by Boy Scouts who offer guided tours.

Maine’s Department of Conservation says the best fall colors are in the western lakes and mountain region. Vibrant hues of yellow, red and orange will be nearing or at their peak color over the next week in most of Northern Maine. Most of all the weather seems to be holding the leaves in the trees. For those of you who are into snowmobiling and skiing, take a look at the photos of our New Year’s 2006 storm. Just the usual run of the mill 40 inch snowstorm. The snow had drifted to over 8 feet deep on the roof.

Fort Kent used to have a canoe race on the Fish River which ran for a number of years. Unfortunately it was discontinued in1996. The chamber of commerce decided to revive the tradition this year with a series of events we called Riverfest 2007. There were three races: the anything that floats fun run, a 14 mile traditional canoe and kayak race and a 10 mile race for motorized canoes. Riverfest also included a barbecue at the finsh line, exhibits by the Department of Fish and Game and a travelling musuem featuring the Ways of the Woods. Forty five canoes and kayaks competed and an estimated 500 spectators were on hand at the park. By the looks of all the smiling faces a good time was had by all. I’ll post more pictures as they become available.

Well Deb’s brother Doug tells us the trails are fading fast. Guess this will be the last weekend for the sleds for this year. Book early for next season, you remember how busy things get during ‘the season’. You can still catch sugar season while you are here. We visited the Sucrerie Unique, over on the Canadian side, about 10 miles from the Northern Door Inn, last weekend and if you like maple syrup, you will love the sugar house. This is where you get the best on the planet. There are several in the area, just ask for directions and better get up here soon as the sugar season is only 4 to 6 weeks long and you don’t want to miss it.
Don’t forget the spring melt means fishing is just around the corner. We are cleaning out the boats and getting the fishing gear out of the attic, putting new lines on the reels and oiling up the outboard. We have dozens of lakes and trout streams just jumping with fish. Don’t forget to get your Maine fishing lic. and we hope to see you soon.

Well the CanAm Crown is over for this year, a bit less than ‘optimal’ conditions but mushers and teams pulled through.
Congratulations to Rick Larson of Sand Coulee, Montana for winning the Crown 250 and to his lead dogs Aspen and Jacob.
We would also like to congratulate Rita Wehseler, the highest placing female
musher in the history of the CanAm for placing second. And, let’s not forget Maine’s own Don Hibbs of Millinocket for placing third. Sure he’s from ‘down south’, but hey, we Mainiacs have to stick together.
